What:
The Second Annual FAS 5K Run-Walk is being held to benefit the
Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities (AADD). The race helps
AADD build awareness of the fact that women drinking alcohol while
pregnant is the leading known preventable cause of birth defects and
intellectual disabilities. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is the most serious
condition in the list of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
Attendees/Interviews: Carey Sipp, AADD.
Members of the FAS Parent Support Group and their children will be
participating in the run/walk to help support AADD’s educational efforts.
Research: Each year about 40,000 babies in the U.S. are born with preventable
alcohol-related birth defects. FAS is the most recognized and serious
condition in the spectrum of developmental disabilities caused by
mothers drinking while pregnant.
Many social ills, including violence, learning disorders, school drop-out
rates, and mental health disorders, can be traced back to prenatal
exposure to alcohol.
Additional Details: AADD promotes advocacy for Atlanta-area individuals and families living
with developmental disabilities and takes an ongoing, proactive approach
to FASD awareness.
Offered throughout metro Atlanta, its health and wellness programs have
educated thousands of individuals – including students, social service
providers, and healthcare professionals – on the risks of birth defects
and intellectual disabilities associated with drinking and drug abuse
during pregnancy.
About the AADD: For half a century, AADD has been serving individuals and families with
developmental disabilities by building communities of support,
acceptance, and opportunity. The nonprofit organization is celebrating its
51st anniversary in 2007.
Registration/Information: $25 registration fee per entry. For race registration or more information, please visit www.aadd.com.
