Georgians Convene on Capitol to Meet with Legislators About Disability Issues
WHAT: Georgians from across the state will come to the state Capitol on Feb. 13 to meet with their legislators on disability issues. Parents, family members and self advocates will participate, scheduling one-on-one meetings with their legislators to discuss these important issues.
WHEN: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
WHERE: Georgia State Capitol
WHY: Currently, there are close to 6,000 people with disabilities waiting for services in the state with an average of 1,000 new people added each year.
- Disability advocates will be asking their legislators to expand services for people with disabilities to be able to live and work in the community
- Advocates will also push to increase the rates paid to providers so that support workers can be adequately paid.
About the Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities
Founded in 1956, AADD (www.aadd.org) has grown from a local, grass-roots not-for-profit organization founded by a group of concerned parents to become Georgia’s premiere provider of family support, advocacy, and education for children, adults, and families living with developmental disabilities.
In its 51-year history, AADD has been at the forefront of building strong collaborative partnerships. The result of these partnerships is increased public awareness of the benefits to our culture when we are inclusive of persons with developmental disabilities, and the promotion of needed policy change to ensure that people living with developmental disabilities are heard and respected at every level of society.
