Tommy Nobis Award
This award recognizes an individual whose efforts, as a volunteer for AADD, represent an outstanding achievement for the benefit of people with developmental disabilities.
Dave Zilles has been an outstanding volunteer for AADD. As a valuable part of the volunteer efforts at the state capitol this year, he testified before a House Subcommittee for the Unlock the Waiting Lists! Campaign, and made numerous visits to key legislators during the session for one-on-one meetings concerning Medicaid waivers. He participated as a father who is passionate about services for his son and others at a press conference this year and continued to contribute by giving his story to an Associated Press reporter. His enthusiasm and professionalism is demonstrated in the work he does, and he never says “no” to an opportunity to get involved at the Capitol.
Mr. Zilles’ son Jon was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia at age 11. With the support and advocacy of his family, Jon is currently living independently in his own condo, utilizing the Medicaid Independent Care Waiver which provides him with personal assistance.
Mr. Zilles is one of the founding members of the Greater Atlanta Ataxia Support Group and is currently one of its directors. He joined the National Ataxia Foundation’s Board of Directors two years ago. As a very active board member, he has brought various initiatives to the Board to help better serve the ataxia community. In addition, Mr. Zilles serves on the Board of the State Independent Living Council for Georgia in the position of Treasurer. He has been very active in advocating for young adults with disabilities and is a member of the 2007-2008 Partners in Policymaking class, which is sponsored by the Georgia Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities. He also serves on the board of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Seek-a-Miracle Foundation.
