Jarrett Banks
(The Kroger Company)

Employee of the Year Award

This award recognizes an individual with a developmental disability who has displayed outstanding effort and growth in his or her employment situation.

Twenty-five-year-old Jarrett Banks is described as a “ray of sunshine” by his co-workers as he loves helping customers, especially seniors, load and unload their grocery carts, all the while smiling and talking with them.  According to his co-workers, he keeps customers smiling why they are waiting to check out, and he always has a positive, can-do attitude.

Mr. Banks graduated from the DeKalb Transition Class in May of 2004.  As part of his work training program, he had the opportunity to work at the Kroger store in Decatur.  He received excellent supports through the program and the staff at Kroger and was very successful.  Upon graduation from Druid Hills High School, he was hired as a part-time courtesy clerk working 20 hours per week.  Mr. Banks bags groceries, returns items to the shelves, picks up carts from the parking lot, and assists customers.  Staff members know him to be reliable, punctual, and consistent.

Recently while shopping, his former DeKalb County bus driver overheard customers in the store discussing Mr. Banks and his personality.  One customer said to the other while pointing at Mr. Banks, “Now that’s why I drive out of my way to shop here.”  Another customer stated, “We need to have Mr. Banks teach customer service to the employees at my company.”  Because of his determination and hard work, Mr. Banks is an inspiration to everyone who meets him.
